A Rest Stop Designed for Recreation and Community
UG Group (formerly 2WR+ Partners) played a key role in designing a rest stop as part of the Rails to Trails project in Columbus. This development repurposes abandoned railway infrastructure, promoting active lifestyles and fostering community engagement. The project includes two strategically placed rest stop buildings, offering retail and public amenities for both trail users and local residents.
Additionally, the design enhances accessibility, making the space more inclusive for people of all ages. By blending history with modern design, UG Group created a functional and inviting space where people can relax, connect, and enjoy the outdoors.
A Rest Stop That Honors Columbus’s Industrial Past
The design thoughtfully preserves Columbus’s railroad history while introducing a modern and sustainable vision. Key architectural features include:
- Exposed steel columns, reflecting the strength of historic rail infrastructure.
- Sun shading elements, improving visitor comfort and energy efficiency.
- A long gable roof, inspired by railcars that once traveled these tracks.
- Brick facades and large windows, creating an open and welcoming atmosphere.
