Modernizing Schwob Memorial Library at Columbus State University
UG Group (formerly 2WR+ Partners) transformed Columbus State University – Schwob Memorial Library, into a state-of-the-art academic hub. Built in 1971, the four-story mid-century building featured an exposed waffle slab and a central concrete core. Over time, it saw selective upgrades but needed a major transformation. In 2018, UG Group led a full renovation to modernize the higher education library, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of students and faculty.
The centerpiece of this project was the Learning Commons, a flexible, student-focused space. It integrates multimedia technology, study areas, and academic support services, ensuring the library remains essential for student success. The design promotes collaboration, encourages independent learning, and creates a welcoming environment for all students.
Enhancing the Student Experience in a Higher Education Library
The renovation introduced several key improvements:
- Academic Support Integration – The Learning Commons combines the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and Academic Center for Tutoring (ACT) in one shared space. This fosters collaboration and accessibility.
- Expanded Teaching & Study Areas – The redesign includes 13 offices, a workroom, breakroom, two classrooms (50-seat and 32-seat), tutoring rooms, and flexible study lounges.
- Multimedia Learning Environments – The facility now supports digital learning with advanced technology and modern study tools.
- Better Natural Light & Acoustics – Large windows bring in daylight, while sound control measures ensure a quiet study environment.
- Flexible, Inclusive Design – The new layout removes barriers to academic support, making services more accessible and inviting.
- Improved Student Engagement – The updated space fosters interaction between students and faculty, promoting a collaborative academic culture.
